COSF News (February 2010)
Conejo Canyons Management Plan update
On Jan. 13th, the COSCA Board approved the Draft Conejo Canyons Management Plan, a resource management and public access plan for 3,600 acres of open space in northwest Thousand Oaks. The plan proposes (among other things) 13 miles of new trails, three new trailheads, and new visitor amenities including picnic tables and horse waterers. Construction of the first of the new trails is expected to begin this fall, after an environmental analysis has been completed.
Spring Trail Work Day is scheduled for March 27, 2010
If you enjoy helping with the maintenance, repair, and/or building of trails, please
reserve March 27th on your calendar. Details of the event will be published in next
month’s edition of this news-page. For more information, please call the COSCA Park
Rangers’ office at 805-381-2741.
Conejo Open Space Trails Education Days
Preparations are underway for this year’s Trails Education Days, an intensive environmental
and open space education program for CVUSD fifth graders. The program is aimed at sparking
the students’ excitement about the value of open space and is intended to instill in them
an awareness of their roles in its care and preservation. The open space adventure begins
as volunteer hike leaders introduce groups of 10 to 14 kids to the ecology and geology of
the area during their one-hour hikes into Wildwood Park. At Wildwood’s nature center, the
students attend three workshops: local, state and national park rangers explain their
careers; animal trainers/handlers demonstrate live indigenous animals; and volunteer
equestrians, bicyclists, hikers and dog-walkers present trail safety and courtesy concepts.
Without the volunteers who give so much to this program, Trails Education Days could not
take place. We are especially pleased that so many volunteers come back year after year -
ready to give a new crop of fifth graders a valuable open space experience. If you would
like to help, please fill out a Volunteer Application,
or contact either of the Trails Education Days coordinators below:
