19th Annual Conejo Open Space Trail Work Day
This is our biggest trail work event of the year, bringing together hundreds of open space enthusiasts! There will be trail building and open space improvement projects for the whole family - including completion of two new Conejo Open Space trails in the Potrero Open Space area, and maintenance/improvements to some existing trails.

  • October 17, 2009 (Rain date: October 31).
  • Meet at Conejo Community Center, Thousand Oaks (Botanic Garden entrance off Gainsborough Road).
  • 7:30 a.m. – 8:00 a.m.: Registration & board buses. A breakfast bag will be provided.
  • 8:00 a.m. – noon: Trail Work
  • Noon – 2:00 p.m.: “Thank You” lunch for participating volunteers. Drawings will be held during the luncheon and trail work volunteers will be eligible to win prizes. (The grand prize is a new mountain bike donated by Giant Bicycles!) Must be present to win.
  • Water will be available at the sign-in area, so be sure to bring a water bottle and fill up before you get on the bus. Toilets will be at Conejo Community Park only and not at the work sites, so please use the facilities before you are bussed to your project area.
  • Wear protective clothing, sturdy shoes, GLOVES, hat, and sunscreen. If you have some loppers or hand tools, please bring them. (Be sure to put your identification on any tools you bring as we will not be responsible for lost tools.)
  • Beware of poison oak, ticks, and rattlesnakes.
  • Have a great day in your community open space!
Sponsored by Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency. For more info, call the Ranger office: 805-381-2741. Questionable weather or rain: call 805-402-9550.

Conejo Open Space Foundation 2009 Fall Membership Drive
The Conejo Valley community is acutely aware of the adverse effects of urban sprawl, and it realizes that planned growth must be balanced with open space preservation to maintain our quality of life and land values. Please join us in what may be a unique opportunity to assure that our planned open space ring is completed and that the beautiful views we enjoy today are preserved for our enjoyment and for future generations to come.

To join, to renew your membership, or perhaps to upgrade to a family membership, please use our online application. For more information, email Julie Osborn at volunteer@cosf.org. Your membership dues and donations are tax-deductible. Funds received may used in several ways -- to maintain or enhance our existing open space, to acquire additional open space, or to educate the community, especially our children, as to their role as custodians and protectors of our open space.

Soil Sampling in Lang Ranch and Woodridge Open Space areas
Over the next several months, staff and contractors from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Department of Toxic Substances Control will be collecting surface and subsurface soil samples in the Lang Ranch and Woodridge Open Space areas. The Conejo Open Space soil samples will be analyzed to determine natural background levels of chemicals and radionuclides present in the soil. Scientists will compare these “clean” samples to contaminated soil samples from the Santa Susana Field Lab south of Simi Valley, as part of the effort to clean up the Field Lab, a former rocket engine test site and nuclear facility. For more information, refer to the COSCA staff report about the sampling or contact COSCA Manager Kristin Foord at (805) 449-2505.
