COSF News (April 2008)
Spring Trail Work Day - Los Robles Trail
THANK YOU! to the trail work coordinator/leader Burt Elliott, to the COSCA Park Rangers, and to all of the volunteers who turned out for the 2008 Conejo Open Space Spring Trail Work Day. This year’s project was for maintenance and improvement on the Los Robles Trail. To see a slideshow of the 2008 Spring Trail Work Day, click here.
Thousand Oaks has over 150 miles of maintained trails which afford all of us the opportunity to explore and appreciate our open space with
its beauty and tranquility, its Native American history, natural landscapes, native plant communities and wildlife habitats. Volunteers who participate in trail work and other open space programs and projects contribute to keeping this wonderful resource accessible and enjoyable for all.
2008 Trails Education Days - April 28 through May 2
The Conejo Open Space Foundation supports the Conejo Open Space Trails Advisory Committee (COSTAC) and Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency (COSCA) in coordinating this annual environmental education program for Conejo Valley fifth graders. More than 25,000 students have taken part in Trails Education Days since its inception in 1991. This year's T.E.D. event, April 28 through May 2, 2008, is expected to be attended by more than 1600 Conejo Valley Unified School District students. The event begins with a nature hike, followed by various programs including animal demonstrations, trail safety and courtesy, and presentations by Park Rangers. In a writing contest, the students describe things they learned during their Trails Education Days, such as information about various plants and animals, the ecology of the area, human impact on the environment, or thoughts on how we might better protect our natural resources.
Another Conejo Open Space trail is “adopted”
Adopt-A-Trail is a Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency (COSCA) volunteer program supported by the Conejo Open Space Foundation (COSF). It is designed to encourage local participation in the on-going maintenance and building
of public trails through the "adoption" of specific COSCA trails, or trail segments, by an individual, group, or organization.
The latest trail to be adopted is the scenic Los Padres Trail near the southern end of Moorpark Road. The Los Padres open space includes chaparral-covered hillsides, oak woodlands, and one of the most beautiful stands of coast live oaks in Thousand Oaks. Deer, rabbits, California quail, several migrating bird species, and many other animals frequent the area. The trail can be easily accessed from a trailhead on Los Padres Drive. It also links to Los Robles Trail.
Lee and Gigi Corkett are the adopters of the Los Padres Trail. They have lots of outdoor interests, and particularly love rock climbing and camping. Lee and Gigi decided to adopt a trail after participating in the Conejo Open Space Trail Work Day last fall. They found the trail work to be a rewarding experience, and were fascinated to learn how a trail is built and all that goes into maintaining one. Their appreciation of the open space is apparent as they were recently featured on the front page of the Ventura County Star sitting in front of the waterfall at Wildwood!
Conejo Open Space Foundation at Arbor/Earth Day

With many exhibitors, entertainment, free trees and plants, composting techniques, arts and crafts, children’s activities, park rangers, wild animals, fire and police displays, and more, this is an event that makes environmental education fun for the whole family.
The Conejo Open Space Foundation (COSF) will host a booth at the Arbor/Earth Day event. Stop by and visit with our volunteers to learn about what’s happening in the Conejo Open Space, and to pick up open space literature, trail maps, event schedules, and information.
