Career Fair
On Thursday evening, March 6, 2008, the Conejo Open Space Foundation, will participate in the annual Conejo Valley Unified School District's Career Fair. Open to students of all ages, the Foundation will provide information on environmental careers from the viewpoint of three professionals: Shelly Austin, Land Use Planner for the City of Thousand Oaks, Ranger Jane "Spider" Fawke, of the Conejo Recreation and Park District, and Michael Richards, an urban anthropologist and cultural resource manager.

Conejo Open Space Spring Trail Work Day
The annual Spring Trail Work Day is scheduled for the morning of March 22, 2008. The location of this year's trail work will be determined soon. For information, please contact Supervising COSCA Park Ranger Glen Kinney at 805-381-2741.

At last year's Spring Trail Work Day, many volunteers turned out to complete the construction of a new section of a Conejo Open Space trail. This multi-use trail (open to hikers, bicyclists, and equestrians) is in the Dos Vientos area of Newbury Park, just north of Lynn Road. It spans from Reino Road on the east, to Via Las Brisas on the west, and is approximately 1.25 miles in length. There are wonderful views from the upper elevations - an overview of the nearby urban development, the Conejo Valley and its beautiful surrounding mountains to the east, and Mugu State Park to the south.

New COSTAC member appointed
The Conejo Open Space Trails Advisory Committee (COSTAC) has a new regular member. Nathan Lee, an open space enthusiast, an avid bicyclist, and a former alternate member of COSTAC, accepted the position in early February. Congratulations to Nathan.

Formed in 1989, COSTAC's eleven member committee is composed of hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians who are appointed by the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency (COSCA) Board of Directors for a three-year term. COSTAC acts in an advisory capacity, reviewing issues and making recommendations to the COSCA Board regarding open space and trails.

Trails Education Days
The Conejo Open Space Foundation supports the Conejo Open Space Trails Advisory Committee (COSTAC) and Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency (COSCA) in coordinating this annual environmental education program for Conejo Valley fifth graders. More than 25,000 students have taken part in Trails Education Days since its inception in 1991. This year's T.E.D. event, April 28 through May 2, 2008, is expected to be attended by more than 1600 Conejo Valley Unified School District students. The event begins with a nature hike, followed by various programs including animal demonstrations, trail safety and courtesy, and presentations by Park Rangers. In a writing contest, the students describe things they learned during their Trails Education Days, such as information about various plants and animals, the ecology of the area, human impact on the environment, or thoughts on how we might better protect our natural resources.
