2006 Conejo Open Space Trail Work Day
Saturday, October 21 was the 16th Annual Conejo Open Space Trail Work Day. Thanks to all the volunteers who participated, the event was a great success. Many trails in the Conejo Open Space were improved and/or finished, including trails in the Botanic Gardens, Reino/Las Brisas, and Dos Vientos Areas.

Each Volunteer received a free sack breakfast, then groups of trail workers were transported to various work sites. All work crews were supervised by Rangers and qualified trail crew leaders. Following the trail work, volunteers were treated to a barbecue sponsored by Carlson Building Materials. During the barbecue there were drawings where many prizes were awarded. The grand prize was a new mountain bike, donated by Bill's Bike Shop in Camarillo.

A "mini" Trail Work Day is currently being planned for March 2007. Please watch this site for information.

Trail Patrol Volunteers are On the Job
COSCA Trail Patrol volunteers are now fully equipped with communication devices, first aid kits, uniforms, and i.d. badges. You will see them out on the trails assisting COSCA Rangers by patrolling open space areas and providing additional safety for those who use the COSCA trails.

Trail Patrol is made up of trained volunteers, and includes hikers, bicyclists and equestrians who have been certified through a formal training program.

Adopt-A-Trail Volunteer is Taking Adoption to a New Level
COSCA's Adopt-A-Trail program is designed to encourage local participation in the on-going maintenance and building of public trails. Trails or portions of trails in the Conejo Open Space are available for "adoption" by individuals, groups, or organizations. Adopters agree to be responsible for the maintenance and/or development of a trail or a trail segment. Currently, at least 17 Conejo Open Space trails have been adopted, and more are available.

The adopter of the Hidden Meadows / Pathfinder trail is not only doing the trail maintenance, but he is gong to do some needed rerouting on "his" trail under the direction and coordination of the CJOSCA rangers. This is obviously a great contribution to all trail users, and is especially important to this dedicated volunteer, as he uses his trails to commute to work!

COSF Membership Drive Yields Great Results
Thanks to a wonderful response from Foundation members and supporters, the Conejo Open Space Foundation's 2006 Fall Membership Drive has already netted over $2,200. In its effort to help balance the community's planned growth with open space preservation, the Foundation may use these funds in several ways: to maintain or enhance the existing Conejo Open Space, to acquire additional open space, to promote and support the Conejo multi-use trail and open space systems, and to educate the public, especially children, about our open space and the environment.
