Hillcrest Open Space Loop

Moderate 5 mile loop through a costal sage environment with a total elevation gain/loss of about 1400 feet. This hike has lots of up and down sections, some fairly steep, especially in the first half.

How to get there: The trailhead is on the north side of Hillcrest Drive, about 1/3 of a mile west of Westlake Blvd. Parking is not permitted on this section of Hillcrest, but is allowed on nearby residential streets.

Detailed Hike Description & Photos:

From this trailhead, the loop follows Hillcrest Ridge Trail to a point overlooking north-east Thousand Oaks, then returns by way of White Sage Trail.
Take the trail up the hill. Within the first ¼ mile, there is a 250 ft. ascent, and in the following ½ mile, an additional 350 ft. From there, it’s down, up, down, up, etc.
The vegetation is mostly low brush, and there is no shade. Look for vast fields of wildflowers in the spring. The trail generally has good footing, and is pretty well cleared, but a few areas may be somewhat overgrown following heavy rain seasons.
From the higher elevations, there are amazing views in all directions.
The northern-most end of the loop is a little over 2 miles into the hike. At the trail intersection, turn left to return by way of White Sage Trail.
The return trail roughly follows the power lines, as it meanders back to the Hillcrest trailhead. This portion of the loop (although there are some ascents and descents), is considerably less strenuous than the earlier portion.
