COSCA Volunteer Corps: Trail Work
The COSCA Volunteer Corps Trail Work program is coordinated by the Conejo Open Space Trails Advisory Committee, and it is supported financially by the Conejo Open Space Foundation as well as the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency. Trail maintenance projects are usually joint projects with the
Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council
and/or the Concerned Off-Road Bicyclists
Association.
Conejo Open Space Spring Trail Work Day
The 2008 Spring Trail Work Day took place on March 22.
This trail maintenance project greatly improved the switchback portion of the Los Robles Trail to the west of the Moorpark Road trailhead. Volunteers met at 8:30 am and worked until around 2:00 pm with a short lunch break. Many badly eroded and rutted sections of trail were repaired, and drainage was improved to minimize future damage. Work on Wildwood's Eagle Point Trail was done by SMMTC and CLU volunteers.
Eagle Point is a lovely area in Wildwood Park - it's past the waterfall and along the wooded stream. On Saturday, September 29th, 2007, volunteers from the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council (SMMTC) joined forces with student volunteers from California Lutheran University's Service Day to perform a trail maintenance project on the 0.33 mile Eagle Point Trail. Seven volunteers from CLU teamed with six volunteers from the Trails Council for the effort. The crew performed minor brush clearance and improvement of erosion damage on the trail. The tasks included the reopening of a short section of trail, which had become closed off due to the heavy brush and poison oak. The other significant accomplishments of the day were improvements to the stream crossing and to the connector trail near the picnic area. Old, rotted steps were removed and a new gentle sloping tread was installed leading down to the streambed. On the other side of the stream, the tread was widened and steps repaired. Regular visitors to this area will notice these improvements immediately, - and all visitors will appreciate Eagle Point Trail as one of the many beautiful and tranquil areas in Wildwood Park.
The 17th Annual Conejo Open Space Trail Work Day, sponsored by the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency (COSCA), took place on October 13, 2007. Approximately 130 hikers, mountain bikers, equestrians, and open space enthusiasts participated in this event. Each volunteer received a free sack breakfast before buses took them to Hidden Meadows Trail, about a mile northwest of the intersection of Kanan Road and Lindero Canyon Road. Rangers and qualified leaders supervised as the work crews built a new trail to replace much of the older existing trail. Following the trail work, participants were treated to a barbecue lunch sponsored by Carlson Building Materials of Thousand Oaks. During the barbecue, drawings were held to give away a variety of prizes, including the grand prize: a mountain bike donated by Bill's Bike Shop of Camarillo. Youth programs were held at the Thousand Oaks Botanic Garden. See a
