COSCA Volunteer Corps: Trail Work
The COSCA Volunteer Corps Trail Work program is coordinated by the Conejo Open Space
Trails Advisory Committee, and it is supported financially by the Conejo Open Space
Foundation as well as the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency. Trail building and
trail maintenance projects are usually joint projects with the
Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council
and/or the Concerned Off-Road Bicyclists
Association.
See the current Volunteer Manual for a more
detailed description of the volunteer programs. The Annual Trail Work Day is described
starting on page 4, and Special Trail Work Days are described starting on page 6.

Recent Trail Work Days
2012 Conejo Open Space Spring Trail Work Day
Dozens of volunteers helped build a new trail in Wildwood Park during the 2012
Conejo Open Space Spring Trail Work Day on March 24, 2012. The new trail is part of
a loop of trails around Lizard Rock, and it will also provide much improved access
into Wildwood from the new bridge site in the Hill Canyon area. Click

2011 Conejo Open Space Trail Work Day
Scores of volunteers participated in the 21st annual Conejo Open Space Trail Work
Day that took place on October 15, 2011. There were two primary projects: trail
building in the Sunset Hills area of Thousand Oaks, and projects for families and
scout groups at the Conejo Valley Botanic Garden.
The Sunset Hills trail project is located within a 238-acre block of open space
that protects oak woodlands, non-native grasslands and coastal sage scrub. The
area supports many species of wildlife, including birds of prey such as
black-shouldered kites, northern harriers and red-tailed hawks. The newly aligned
trail (open to hikers, bicyclists and equestrians) provides beautiful views of
Bard Reservoir and, on clear days, a view of the Pacific Ocean.
The Conejo Valley Botanic Garden is 33 acres of natural terrain encircled by the
city of Thousand Oaks. From the sweeping vistas at the peak of the Garden, through
fifteen unique hillside specialty gardens, and onto the hiking trail along the
stream, the Conejo Valley Botanic Garden is one of the hidden gems of the Conejo
Valley.
After the work was done, volunteers were treated to lunch. After lunch, a drawing
was held to give away some very nice prizes including the grand prize of a bicycle!

2011 Conejo Open Space Spring Trail Work Day
The 2011 Conejo Open Space Spring Trail Work Day took place on March 26, 2011.
Quite a few volunteers turned out to help complete the Potrero Ridge Trail between
Reino Road and the hilltop watertank to the east. After the trail work was done,
volunteers were treated to lunch (hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, soft drinks, and
cookies) served at the work site. Pictures of the trail work being done are
available at the Concerned Off-Road Bicyclists Association (CORBA) website. Click

2010 Conejo Open Space Trail Work Day
The 20th annual Conejo Open Space Trail Work Day took place on October 16, 2010.
Many groups and many individual volunteers participated. Volunteers were bussed
to the work site in Wildwood Park where they built a new connector trail to link
the Lower Santa Rosa Trail to the upper Santa Rosa Trail. Following the trail work,
participants were bussed back to the Conejo Community Center where they were
treated to lunch. During lunch, drawings were held to give away a variety
of prizes including a brand new mountain bike donated by Giant Bicycles.

2010 Conejo Open Space Spring Trail Work Day
The 2010 Conejo Open Space Spring Trail Work Day took place on March 27, 2010 on the
Mountain Creek Trail and the Potrero Ridge Trail in Newbury Park. On Mountain Creek Trail,
much of the top section was widened and drainage was improved around a switchback. A lot
of brush and overgrowth was cleared on Potrero Ridge Trail near its intersection with
the Mountain Creek Trail. Pictures of the trail work being done are available at the
Concerned Off-Road Bicyclists Association (CORBA) website. Click

2009 Conejo Open Space Trail Work Day
The 19th annual Conejo Open Space Trail Work Day took place on October 17, 2009.
In spite of unusually high temperatres, over 160 volunteers turned out to make the
event a great success. Many groups and many individual volunteers participated.
Volunteers were bussed to the work site where they realigned a trail in the Dos Vientos area. Work was also done at the Conejo Valley Botanic Garden. Following
the trail work, participants were bussed back to the Conejo Community Center where
they were treated to lunch. During lunch, drawings were held to give away a variety
of prizes including a brand new mountain bike donated by Giant Bicycles.
